Robert Schuett
Biography
Dr. Robert Schuett served in Austrian foreign intelligence, including a secondment to the Office of the President, before becoming Honorary Professor in the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University. He specializes in political theory and intelligence studies.
The author of two books and co-editor of two more, Schuett is best known for Hans Kelsen’s Political Realism (2021), the first and leading study of the Austrian-American jurist as a political realist. It was translated into Spanish in 2025. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Austrian-American History.
His op-eds and commentary have appeared in the Kyiv Post, Der Standard, Die Presse, Wiener Zeitung, Die Furche, Salzburger Nachrichten, and RUSI Commentary, and he writes regularly for Global Policy. He serves as Chair of the Austrian Political Science Association (ÖGPW).
He was the 2025–26 Fulbright-Botstiber Visiting Professor of Austrian-American Studies at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), where he remains a Network Affiliate. Drawing on his dual background in academia and government service, he advises companies and governments on political and strategic risk.
