Swiping the country’s uranium would require one of the largest raids in military history.

In opening his annual remarks to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for member countries to address the dire international security situation, as described in this year’s Doomsday Clock statement.

Direct radiation lasts less than a second, but its lethal level can extend over a mile in all directions from the detonation point of a modern-day nuclear weapon with an explosive yield equal to the effect of several hundred kilotons of TNT.

Currently, commercial spent fuel remains at 75 sites across the US, including 18 “orphaned sites,” where it has been left at decommissioned reactor sites. Local communities are increasingly concerned about this legacy of nuclear power production and are seeking alternative strategies.
