Biography

Dr. Larry Brandt is a Visiting Scholar in the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University.  He is currently leading a project to develop and evaluate cooperative technical options with China that can reduce the international risks of nuclear terrorism.

During his long prior career at Sandia National Laboratories, Dr. Brandt played diverse roles as an analyst and subsequently manager of a systems analysis department at Sandia’s Livermore, California laboratory. In these roles, he led and performed numerous studies in support of the U.S. Departments of Energy, Defense, and Homeland Security addressing nuclear defense and crisis response, nuclear weapons development and planning, missile defense, and response to radiological/nuclear events. Dr. Brandt has also participated in a number of national technology panels, including the Defense Science Board Summer Study on Challenges to Military Operations in Support of National Interests (2007), the Defense Science Board Summer Study on Reducing Vulnerabilities to Weapons of Mass Destruction (2005), and the National Research Council Study Committee on Advanced Biodetection (2002–03). Dr. Brandt received a BSEE from Oregon State University, and a MSEE and PhD (Engineering-Economic Systems) from Stanford University.
